My coworker, who is a 28 year old, unmarried man with no children, told me yesterday that he was buying a 2014 Mustang. He came into work today and asked if I wanted to go see it. “Of course!!,” I said.

. . . .

It’s a V-6 with an automatic.

And then he drove off and killed a small family of Deer innocently walking on the side of a road.

In your coworker’s defense, if he likes it, and likes to drive it (or at least be seen in it), isn’t that enough?

ouch, that’s tough... You want to make fun of his blunder, but you don’t want to make him feel bad about all that money he just dumped into what is essentially a 2 door taurus.

In all honesty, how was I supposed to react? I said, “cool” in as non-committal of a way as I could muster.

I am not so much of an ass that I am going to say, “Well, you screwed that one up.”

Exactly. And he’s not a car guy (obviously). I don’t want to be a dick. It’s newer, faster, and better looking than my 2009 Jetta. But still: the Jetta knows what it is.

Natural selection. Do we really want someone who would buy a 6 cylinder Mustang with a slushbox tainting the gene pool?

And, in his defense, he’s probably about 6' 4". He said that he liked the Mustang because, surprisingly, it was one of the few coupes he could fit in comfortably. I had actually suggested a GTI to him, but he said they were too small to be comfortable.

I have a friend who is 6'7" that fits great in the Challenger. and his 6'9" brother has a Charger.

I’m actually surprised he fits in the mustang well

As someone who is 6'4" as well a GTI is too small. Mustang, Charger, and Challenger are the best Muscle cars for tall people. The camaros visibility is so poor for someone who is tall as I am. I do know i fit in an NSX, Murcilago, Gen 2 Viper, and GT-Rs. I am pleasantly surprised that I fit in the, but the GT-R not so much because of it’s size.

I would cut him some slack. 300 hp V6 isn’t anything to laugh at. Yeah it doesn’t have the best suspension but he could remedy that.

You have to realize, this is probably the coolest car he has ever owned.

Does a Mustang really offer more space than a Golf? A Golf is a full compact and even as a GTI considerably taller than a Mustang. Now I know a Mustang is larger (excluding hight) on the outside, but unlike the Golf it isn’t exactly designed with the efficient use of space as a priority. From what I’ve read the Golf offers more space than a Mustang, excluding width.

I have a 2016 GTI, I’m ~5'11", and the car fits me like a glove. That being said, my dad is 6'4" and just barely fits in it with the seat the whole way back. Perfectly reasonable that your coworker didn’t think a GTI would fit them (even though the GTI is freakin’ fantastic).

Incorrect. Prior to 2004, yes. Equal to 2005-2010 with less torque than the 4.6 3v respectively.

That said it’s a good engine. Swap it into a late 70s Granada and grin while embarrassing people in their stock Fox Mustangs.

My coworker has a ‘07 convertible with a V6 and an automatic. Nearly everyday it is the largest engined car in our parking lot (as US cars aren’t very common in Finland anymore) but he still hears so much about those two missing cylinders.

They’re the kind of people who drive very boring, uninteresting cars, so instead of actually driving something fun and interesting, they want everyone else to be more “tolerant” of boring cars. Apparently having an opinion is intolerance.

I never said he did. I was referring to how the commenters on this post in general seem to be advocating for the idea of making him feel bad about his decision by telling him they don’t like that his car is a V6 and auto. As they say, “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all”.

It’s not a bad car. The 3.7 is more than enough for most people. Anytime someone buys something other than a 4cyl/CVT econobox, it’s a win.

Man, people took this post way too seriously. I was just bustin’ his balls.

As I said earlier, that V6 Mustang is newer, faster, and better looking than my Jetta. And I agree that 300 horse is a lot of power. And he actually did it right: Deep Impact Blue with the black wheels (looks very good). And I agree that if it makes him happy, then it’s all good.

I still would have spent that money differently (but I am also 35 and married with a kid on the way).
